Cooking on a budget doesn’t have to mean limiting your ingredient options.
Dollar Tree may not be the first place shoppers think of for ingredients, but a recent roundup from The Takeout highlighted several surprisingly upscale food finds on the discount chain’s shelves.
The retailer’s website features a variety of imported pantry staples and specialty ingredients that can help elevate everyday .

Kalamata olives are renowned for their bold flavor, and can elevate any or pizza or be eaten straight out of the jar.
Dollar Tree describes its Della Natura Pitted Kalamata Olives as a “.”
“The olives are scrumptious and amazing at the same time,” the website says. “You can add them as toppers for pizza, sandwiches and other favorite recipes of yours.”
Dollar Tree also suggests using the olives for tapas and pasta.
“The olives are sheer perfection, and bring in an authentic taste and give a depth of flavors,” the site says.
For just $1.50, Dollar Tree offers a 3-ounce tin of , which can offer a smoky flavor to any dish.
One Dollar Tree customer wrote that her grandson eats them almost plain.
“[My] adult grandson loves these oysters,” she said. “Eats with a bowl of rice. I have to keep a bunch on hand.”
The oysters are not available in the state of California, according to Dollar Tree’s site.
“Calling all oyster lovers!” the chain’s website says. “Try Pampa farm-raised Smoked Oysters in sunflower oil with carrots, onions and chili peppers! Each 3-oz. tin is easy to open and ready to eat.”
Chili oil is a popular ingredient to use in Asian cooking, and Dollar Tree offers its own take on the condiment.
Katayama Crunchy Chili Onion Home Spice features dried onion, garlic, red chili, salt, black pepper and paprika extract.
The olive oil-based product offers a “bold, punchy flavor with a spicy crunch,” the store’s website says.
“Surprise guests with a hit of spice and showcase your culinary skills by adding the crunchy chili onion spice to your core recipes,” the website adds.
“All of these ingredients will add a flavorful touch to your dishes. You can use the spice mix for ramen, eggs, noodles, rice bowls, dumplings and more.”
For $1.50, shoppers can buy a 17.6-ounce bag of gnocchi imported from Italy.
The potato dumplings are a ” in terms of the cost and the nutritional value,” according to Dollar Tree’s website.
“Serve them up with marinara sauce, carbonara sauce or gorgonzola cream sauce … the possibilities are endless,” the website says.
“You can even create vegan or dishes with them. An ideal addition to Italian restaurants, soup kitchens, school cafeterias and your home.”
This Italian-imported pesto is GMO-free and offers “the fine taste of Italy right at your table.”
